FAQs

How do I begin working with you?

Taking that first step is simple. You can reach out for a consultation by clicking the button on my Work With Me page or contact me directly by sending an email to info@juliacarpenter.com.

How long are sessions, and how often will we meet?

  • Individual Therapy: Sessions are 50 minutes long and typically take place on a weekly basis to build momentum and maintain consistency.

  • Couples & Family Therapy: Sessions are extended to 75 or 90 minutes to ensure everyone has ample space to be heard.

What does a holistic or integrative approach to mental health mean in your practice?

Rather than simply treating isolated symptoms, my practice honors you as a whole person—mind, body, heart, and spirit. An integrative approach means I weave together diverse therapeutic models, evidence-based tools, and lifestyle considerations to discover and heal the root causes of what you’re experiencing.

Here is what that looks like in our work together:

  • Whole-Person View: I look at how your mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and social well-being intersect.

  • Comprehensive Care: We examine broad factors impacting your vitality, including daily routines, environment, and relationships.

  • Evidence-Based & Collaborative: I utilize proven clinical practices and will happily coordinate with your medical team or other specialists if we are addressing factors like medications, physical health, or nutrition.

  • Client-Centered Empowerment: You are the expert on your own life; my goal is to guide and empower you toward self-trust and healing.

  • Tailored & Relational: I integrate distinct therapeutic frameworks to create an open, conversational space tailored specifically to your story.

What is my cancellation policy?

I hold a 48-hour cancellation policy. You are welcome to cancel or reschedule your session without charge as long as you provide at least 48 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged the full session fee.

If you need to cancel inside that 48-hour window, I will do my best to find another open slot for you within that same week so you don’t miss your session, though availability cannot be guaranteed.

Do you offer video or online sessions?

Yes. I offer secure, HIPAA-compliant Telehealth video sessions to clients located throughout California, allowing you to engage in therapy from the comfort and convenience of your own space.

Who do you work with?

I provide psychotherapy for pre-teens and teens (ages 12+), adults, couples, and family units.

Do I accept insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider and do not accept insurance directly. However, I can provide you with monthly superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage and reimbursement rates vary based on your specific plan and deductible.

To find out what your plan covers, I recommend calling your insurance provider directly and asking these questions:

“Hi, I am planning to start therapy with an out-of-network provider. What is the reimbursement rate on my policy for out-of-network mental health services, and what is my deductible before reimbursement kicks in?”

What is a Good Faith Estimate and the No Surprises Act?

Under the law, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate detailing the expected cost of your medical and mental health care. While it’s impossible to predict the exact number of sessions you might need overall, you can request an estimate of session costs before scheduling. Your ultimate investment depends on your specific goals, individual needs, and how often we meet.

You have the right to request a Good Faith Estimate prior to starting services. If you ever receive a bill that is at least $400 over your estimate, you have the right to dispute it. Be sure to save a copy or photo of your estimate for your records. Learn more about your rights at www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

What is the Standard of Care?

Adhering to the Standard of Care means that as a licensed clinician, I uphold the professional, ethical, and community guidelines expected of practitioners with comparable training in similar areas.

For instance, if I feel your care would be enhanced by collaborating with a psychiatrist, medical doctor, or specialized clinic, I will provide thoughtful referrals. If your needs require a higher level of care than outpatient therapy provides, I will help guide you toward the appropriate clinic or support center.
