I am reminded over and over of the magic that is the breath.
I’ve been using the breath lately to help me through some anxious times. We all have times when we are feeling out of sorts, anxious, or are just “freaking out” about something.
In those moments, it can be hard to access our thinking brains. Can you relate?
I keep going back to the breath to help regulate my nervous system and help me come down from those “freak out” moments. When we I bring my attention back to my breath and my body, it helps to re-establish that connection with my brain.
Here is a simple breathing exercise that you can try when you feel like you are freaking out:
- Breathe in for a count of 5
- Breathe out for a count of 5
- Repeat until you feel calmer
This is an adaptation of Sama Vritti Pranayama (or equal breathing) as explained in Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar.
It sounds very simple. It’s just breathing. However, I notice that I often stop breathing when I am in freak out mode. How about you? So, by refocusing on my breathing and making my breath even, I can calm my nervous system and reconnect with myself. Then, I can make rational decisions again and move on with my day.
May you have peace within,
Julia
